Group/Division

With over 40 years of semiconductor process control experience, chipmakers around the globe rely on KLA to ensure that their fabs ramp next-generation devices to volume production quickly and cost-effectively. Enabling the movement towards advanced chip design, KLA's Global Products Group (GPG), which is responsible for creating all of KLA’s metrology and inspection products, is looking for the best and the brightest research scientist, software engineers, application development engineers, and senior product technology process engineers. Central Engineering is KLA's largest engineering organization comprised of 9 Centers-of-Excellence (CoE) in various disciplines applied across all product groups in the company. These CoE include Handling & Automation, Precision Motion Control, Sensors & Image Acquisition, Platform Design, and Packaging Engineering, among others. Talent includes over 500 engineers across global centers in Israel, China, India, and the US. Each CoE contributes not just talent and deliverables per discipline toward product programs, but also subject matter expertise, best practices, roadmaps, specialized facilities, apparatus, models, and analytics. These differentiate KLA not only in WHAT we do, but also in HOW we do it.

Job Description/Preferred Qualifications

What you will be doing:

KLA makes industrial systems that are indispensable for manufacturing of semiconductors! These systems involve sophisticated hardware, firmware, software and high-performance compute.

The system software engineering position is a core function of our onsite Ann Arbor Software Engineering team! You have the responsibility for controlling various pieces of hardware that form our system as well as coordinating between them. Most of the work will be done using Java at a higher level in the software stack. Successful candidates will have very strong software engineering skills as well as a passion for working with hardware (non-compute mechanical hardware).

This position will have the following responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the design, development, testing and roll out of software solutions that improve the capabilities of the KLA inspection machines.
  • Engage with several hardware and software interdisciplinary teams to understand the system/marketing requirements and to map them to software. Develop a deep understanding of how the system works and be able to provide software solutions for critical customer gaps or issues.
  • Develop and evaluate concepts and designs for the next generation systems by conducting trade-off studies, identifying risk items and suggest mitigation plans.
  • Partner with a geographically distributed team to develop and deliver software solutions.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where communication and collaboration with a large multi-disciplinary team is a significant part of the job.

What we want to see:

  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
  • Previous experience as a Software Engineer or Software Developer working on machine control (non-compute hardware), automation, or instrumentation.
  • Excellent software engineering skills, including applied knowledge of OOP, design patterns, distributed systems, multiprogramming, and microservices.
  • Proficiency in writing, deploying, and maintaining production code in C , C#, or JAVA.
  • Familiarity with interface protocols for cross language software such as CORBA, Apache Thrift, gRPC or similar technologies.
  • Ability to take abstract problem statements and detail them out into concrete requirements and design through collaborative discussions.

Minimum Qualifications

Typically requires bachelor’s degree with 5 years’ work experience, OR Master’s degree with 3 years’ work experience or relevant experience.
